Vicca Journal
Aalto University & Crystal Bennes

The project’s scope was to create a publication showcasing the work of the Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) Master’s Degree at Finland’s Aalto University. The program explores emerging knowledges and practices at the intersections of visual cultures, curating and contemporary art. The theme for this issue was Crisis, and the editor’s specific wish that the word was considered from a historical and nuanced perspective. We decided to look at the long standing religious and medical context of the word when its meaning was “a choice of stark alternatives”.

To illustrate the idea of Crisis we used a horizontal line in the middle of each page, running throughout, at times clearly visible and at others suggested, through a change of typeface or colours. These we contrasted strongly, to emphasise the idea of stark alternatives. The format itself reflected the theme and the program — each page worked as a poster when presented as an exhibition, but also came together as a book, using unconventional folding techniques.
